Week One: “Prophecy or Prophet Candle”

As a part of the Advent season, you will light one candle, a purple candle.

The first Candle of the Advent wreath is called the candle of prophecy. It reminds us of how God spoke to His people through the prophets, offering them the hope of a Savior. It also reminds us of the faithfulness of God’s promises, so that we can live in hope in our depraved world. We can rejoice that God prepares our lives through prophesy to receive Christ when he comes.

As you spend time today recognizing the beginning of the advent season, remember the scripture we read today is to help prepare us to receive Christ as the child who comes to us in Bethlehem. Isaiah’s words also prepare us to receive Christ when he comes again in power. At that time, he will fulfill the promise and prophecy to be Prince of Peace and Wonderful Counselor and for all time.

Light a purple candle. This is the only candle to light on this day. It will also be re-lit each week at this time.

Scripture

Read Isaiah 9:2-7 Holman Christian Standard Version:

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness.

You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy.

The people have rejoiced before You as they rejoice at harvest time and as they rejoice when dividing spoils.

For You have shattered their oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of their oppressor, just as You did on the day of Midian.

For the trampling boot of battle and the bloodied garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire.

For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.

Activity

Share what it means to have something told to you that you may fully understand. How does it make you feel? Now, go back around those gathered and share what it means to have something told to you that you do not understand. Lastly, share how it makes you feel when you are told that something will happen which will be a great thing.

Prayer

“Dear Father, today, as I look at your word, I am amazed at the provisions you give to us to know you are at work. You are preparing me to be ready to receive into this world your son. As a believer, I know to have a better understanding of your prophetic word, accepting your gift is just the beginning. I look forward to this season and what you will teach me through this journey.” Amen.
